Sub-main to shed, Yeadon

We installed a dedicated sub-main from the house to a garden shed in Yeadon to supply a 55 A kiln for a new small business. Work included liaison with the distribution network operator (DNO), running steel wire armoured (SWA) cable, fitting a consumer unit and local isolation for the kiln, plus basic lighting and a socket in the shed.

Project overview

Location: Yeadon

Service: Sub-main to a shed

Property type: House

This job provided a permanent electrical sub-main from the house to an outbuilding to supply a 55 A kiln. The DNO replaced the existing cast-iron rewirable-fuse service head with a 100 A service head before our work. We fitted a switched-fuse isolator in the basement next to the existing consumer unit. From there, we routed the cable through the basement into the kitchen, concealed it beneath the kitchen cupboards, and took it under the living-room floor. We then ran steel wire armoured (SWA) cable to the shed, installed a consumer unit in the shed, fitted local isolation for the kiln and provided a light and a double socket for general use.

Why the customer contacted us

The customer needed a reliable, dedicated supply to a garden shed in Yeadon to run a 55 A kiln for a new business. They found Helix Electrical through Google and chose us after checking our reviews.

Work completed

We coordinated with the distribution network operator to replace the cast-iron rewirable-fuse service head with a 100 A service head. We fitted a switched-fuse isolator in the basement next to the existing consumer unit. From there, we routed the cable through the basement into the kitchen, concealed it beneath the kitchen cupboards, and took it under the living-room floor. The cable route continued under the living room floor to the outside and around the exterior wall into the shed. We ran steel wire armoured (SWA) cable into the outbuilding and terminated it in a Niglon consumer unit. We fitted a 63 A rotary isolator for local isolation of the kiln, and installed a light and a double socket in the shed.

Products installed

100 A service head (fitted by the DNO), steel wire armoured (SWA) cable as the sub-main, Niglon consumer unit in the shed, 63 A rotary isolator for the kiln, switched fuse isolator in the basement next to the existing consumer unit, one light fitting and one double socket in the shed.

Testing and certification

The installation was tested on completion and a certificate was issued.

Problems encountered

The existing service head was an old rewirable-fuse type and needed replacement by the DNO before the new sub-main could be installed. Internally, a large area of solid floor required an alternative route: we ran the cable through the basement up into the kitchen and underneath the kitchen cupboards to reach the living room floor and then out to the exterior.

The result

The sub-main to the shed was installed using steel wire armoured (SWA) cable, and the shed received a dedicated consumer unit, local isolation for the kiln, a light and a socket. The property’s service head was upgraded to 100 A by the DNO and the installation was certified after testing.
